ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
The ESL Program at Nobel University provides comprehensive English classes including grammar, listening, conversation, reading and writing in order for students to acquire fluency in English language for their personal, educational and business practice goals.
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the ESL program, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the confidence and listening and speaking skills necessary to participate successfully in spontaneous oral exchanges with native speakers of English in a variety of personal, professional, and academic settings.
- Demonstrate reading comprehension of English texts intended for developmental (or higher level) English courses.
- Respond appropriately to written or spoken English by writing paragraphs and short essays that communicate ideas clearly.
- Demonstrate conversational speaking competence by using appropriate vocabulary when participating in informal dialogues, role plays, and class discussions.
- Demonstrate cultural awareness by using effective English communication skills in business and social settings.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The ESL Program consists of a total of 675 clock hours (225 clock hours for each level) for 36 weeks. The ESL courses are divided into three (3) levels according to student proficiency: Level 1 (Basic), Level 2 (Intermediate), and Level 3 (Advanced). Each level in this program consists of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation sections.

LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS
Basic (Level 1): This level introduces ESL students to conversational phrases and vocabulary for common scenarios and situations. Vocabulary development is based on related topics and practical discussions from each textbook unit. Pair work and pronunciation practice as well as group methods are facilitated. Students who complete this course successfully will be able to greet and build conversations, use accurate phrases when asking for assistance, describe everyday activities, command a large vocabulary on a variety of topics, and express feelings and reactions on everyday events in English.
Intermediate (Level 2): This course provides students with the focus on a larger, easily recalled, more natural-sounding part of the English language. Widely used phrases are chosen and put into activities where there are many opportunities to practice them. One main goal is to become a better conversationalist. Students who complete this course successfully will be able to understand a basic idiomatic language, engage in authentic, meaningful conversation, and present short speeches to an audience for a variety of purposes.
Advanced (Level 3): This level focuses on listening and understanding other people’s ideas, communicating students’ ideas, and exchanging them with fellow classmates. This course provides students with a unique collection of fluency practice activities designed to improve listening and speaking abilities. Students who complete this course successfully will be able to express their ideas in English, understand a wide range of advertisements, maps, pictures, and recordings, solve problems, exchange information, and describe experiences in class.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of 675 hours with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.00 is required to complete the English as a Second Language program.
TRANSFER CREDITS
Nobel University does not accept transfer credits or units for the English as a Second Language program.
