This page is for applicants who are already in the United States in another nonimmigrant status — for example a B-1/B-2 visitor, H-4 dependent, or similar — and want to switch to F-1 student status so they can study at Nobel University without leaving the country. This is called a change of status (COS), and it must be approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Already on an F-1 visa at another U.S. school? Use the F-1 Transfer-In Applicant page. Coming from your home country for a brand-new F-1 visa? Use the International Applicant page.
What you need to submit
- All standard admission and international student documents. These are the same documents required of every international applicant — see the full list on the International Applicant page (passport, proof of English proficiency, financial documents, and so on).
- Request to Defer Enrollment / Reissue of I-20 Form.
- A copy of your most recent Request for Evidence (RFE) from USCIS, if you have received one.
How the change of status works
- Apply and get admitted. Complete your Nobel University application and submit the documents listed above.
- Receive your I-20. After you are admitted, Nobel issues your I-20 marked for “change of status.”
- File with USCIS. Submit Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) to USCIS and pay the I-901 SEVIS fee.
- Wait for approval. You may not begin full-time F-1 studies until USCIS approves your change of status.
Good to know: USCIS processing times vary and can take several months, so apply as early as possible and keep maintaining your current status while your case is pending. Some applicants instead choose to travel abroad and re-enter with an F-1 visa, which can sometimes be faster. If you’re unsure which path fits your situation, contact our Admissions Office — we’re happy to help.
